Visiting Matthew Soper: A Day Among Sarracenia Giants!

There are few names in the world of carnivorous plants that command as much respect as Matthew Soper’s. As the founder of Hampshire Carnivorous Plants Ltd and an RHS master grower, Matt has become a leading authority in cultivation — especially when it comes to one of his greatest passions: Sarracenia, the North American pitcher plant.

Earlier this summer, I had the unexpected chance to visit Matt at his nursery. The trip came together at the last minute, and I’m incredibly grateful that he was so accommodating — especially considering that Hampshire Carnivorous Plants is only open to the public on select open days throughout the year. Despite the short notice, Matt generously took the time to show me around, and it ended up being one of the highlights of my trip.

Hampshire Carnivorous Plants houses one of the largest and most refined collections of Sarracenia in the UK. From statuesque S. flava to showstopping hybrids in every shade imaginable, Matt’s greenhouses feel like a museum of living art. Every bench overflowed with vigorous, well-grown plants — a testament to decades of careful breeding, selection, and cultivation.

Matt’s reputation as a meticulous and passionate grower is well earned. Whether we were discussing a new cross or marveling at an old favorite, it was clear that his connection to these plants runs deep. And while Sarracenia take center stage, the broader collection — which includes Nepenthes, Drosera, Dionaea and other genera — only adds to the richness of the experience.

What made the visit truly special was Matt himself. We’ve met before at California Carnivores in 2018 and during Laurent Taerwe’s UK visit in 2016. His hospitality, deep knowledge, and willingness to share insights made the day unforgettable.

If you’re a fan of carnivorous plants — especially Sarracenia — and ever find yourself in the UK, I highly recommend planning ahead to attend one of Hampshire Carnivorous Plants’ open days. It’s more than just a nursery; it’s a destination.

Huge thanks again to Matt for the warm welcome and for continuing to set the standard for what’s possible in carnivorous plant cultivation.
