Pinguicula emarginata
emarginata is one of the more unusual species I grow. It does not go through the dramatic succulent dormancy that most Mexican butterworts do, it holds one type of leaf year round, cup shaped and notched at the tip, which is actually where the name comes from, emarginata means notched in Latin. The leaf edges pick up a dark purple color that contrasts nicely against the green center.
It comes from cloud forest habitat in Puebla and Veracruz, growing on wet rocks along rivers, and it likes more moisture than most of the Mexican species I sell. The flowers are small, white, and star shaped, with fine purple veining that is easy to miss unless you look closely.
I have found this one to be a solid gnat trap and a good addition if you already grow the more common Mexican butterworts and want something that behaves a little differently.
Care at a glance
| Light | Bright indirect. More shade tolerant than most Mexican butterworts. |
| Water | Distilled, rain, or RO only. Keep it a bit wetter than other Mexican butterworts, it grows on wet riverbank rock. |
| Soil | 2 parts vermiculite, 2 perlite, 1 peat |
| Temp | 60 to 85°F. No frost. |
| Winter | Minimal. Holds the same leaves year round. |
| Humidity | Likes it a little more humid, but no terrarium needed. |
What to expect
Your plant ships bare root in a small plastic cup, usually 2 or 4 ounces. That cup is just its travel case, so plan to pot it up when it arrives.
Because emarginata does not go fully dormant, it should look close to active growth whenever it arrives. Keep the soil a bit wetter than you would for other Mexican butterworts from day one.
