Wild plants, a full Nepenthes repot, and the last flytrap update of the year

Drosera floridana in the wild, Florida, September 2026

A Different Kind of September
September was a little different around here. I ended up spending quite a bit of time away from the greenhouses, but I saw tons of carnivorous plants in the wild and made it to an amazing Open Day at RedLeaf Exotics. Before any of that, though, there was work to do.

Every Lowland Nepenthes, Repotted
My lowland Nepenthes live in a roughly 8 by 12 foot grow tent inside the big greenhouse, and in September every single plant in there got repotted. They all went into washed coconut husk chips in white hydro pots of various sizes, and the two biggest plants, Nepenthes truncata and N. rafflesiana, moved up into 8 gallon tree pots. I wanted it done before the cold hit, and it worked out perfectly since early September was quite warm here in Colorado.

Over 50 Drosera capensis Varieties
The second project was bench K, third bench on the left. I cleaned up underneath it, installed LED lighting, and filled it with 22 trays (10x20) of Drosera capensis grown for sale. We now have over 50 different varieties available on the site, which is the biggest capensis lineup I have ever offered.

A Baby Moon, Sort Of
On September 10th it was off to Florida for what my wife called a baby moon. Noah Juve of Authority Plants and I thought it was a pretty good excuse to go looking for carnivorous plants in the wild. Leaving my eight months pregnant wife to fend for herself with our 20 month old, Luca, probably did not win me many brownie points, but she was a good sport.

Noah and me with a big wild Sarracenia leucophylla
Noah and I spent the first two days at sites across Florida and Alabama, seeing some of the greatest wild carnivorous plants North America has to offer. The highlight was Drosera floridana in the wild at sunset, with Noah, who only a month earlier had published it and elevated it to its own species.

After some well earned beach time, we road tripped north through Alabama and met up with Dale Schaefer to see two of the rarest carnivorous plants in the wild, Sarracenia oreophila and S. alabamensis. The oreophila was a little late in the season and past its prime, but still spectacular.

If seeing them got you inspired, I have a couple of oreophila hybrids on the site.

RedLeaf Exotics Open Day
From there we made it to Morrison, Tennessee, in time for the RedLeaf Exotics Open Day hosted by Dom Gravine. I have been to a lot of carnivorous plant collections, probably more than anyone living, and Dom's Nepenthes collection is second to none. The care shown on every bench and the lush sphagnum dripping over the edges was breathtaking. We spent a couple of days geeking out at his place before heading back to Colorado to catch up on shipping.

The Last Flytrap Update of the Season
October is the last flytrap update of the year. I will be restocking a lot of varieties that have been sold out all summer, so if there is an interesting flytrap you have been waiting on, now is the time to grab it before winter. October is also a great month to ship, since it stays fairly mild across most of the US before winter sets in and heat packs become necessary.

Annual Greenhouse Walkthroughs
I am hoping to film my annual greenhouse walkthroughs this month, so keep an eye out for them on my YouTube channel. It is the best way to see everything growing here right now, bench by bench.

Things Will Slow Down a Bit
With our new baby due this month, things will slow down a little for a while. Orders will still go out, but listings and replies may take a bit longer than usual. Thank you for the patience, and for all the support this year.
Happy growing.
