This is my go to slow release fertilizer for carnivorous plants that are healthy and ready to grow faster. Nutricote 360 18-6-8 is one of the fertilizers I trust most, and it is one of the exact products I recommend on the blog.
One 2 ounce cup is enough for 100 to 200 mature carnivorous plants, so a little goes a long way. This is a slow release granular fertilizer, meaning you work a small number of prills into the soil or drop a few into the pitchers of a Nepenthes, Heliamphora or Sarracenia, and it feeds the plant steadily over time instead of all at once. I recommend no more than one prill per pitcher to start.
Quick Guide: Using Nutricote Safely
Remember: fertilizer is a tool, not a cure. It will not save a plant that is struggling from bad light, bad water, or the wrong soil. Use it on plants that are already healthy and growing.
How much: use a light hand. A few prills worked into the topsoil, or a few dropped into a Nepenthes or Sarracenia pitcher, is plenty.
How often: start with once a month, and move to twice a month during active growth if the plant is responding well.
By species: Venus flytraps and Sarracenia tolerate light fertilizing well, and young Sarracenia especially love it. Sundews respond very well. Nepenthes benefit significantly, especially in controlled setups. Butterworts can handle and benefit from light fertilization too.
Fertilizing does speed up soil breakdown, so plan to repot a little more often than you would with an unfed plant. It is a small tradeoff for the growth you get back.
