Dionaea muscipula 'Monkey Ass' is another high-impact mutant cultivar, similar in spirit to 'MD Buttcheeks' but with its own distinct personality.

Origin and Naming

This cultivar was selected and named by the well-known German grower Christian Klein (of the nursery Carnivorsandmore). He introduced it around 2011 alongside several other famous clones. The name, as you might guess, comes from the "obvious similarity" of the swollen, rounded, and brightly colored trap lobes to the posterior of certain primates.

Key Characteristics

The "Monkey Ass" Shape: The traps are severely mutated and often stunted. The lobes are significantly rounded and "fleshy" in appearance, curving outward and backward. Unlike a standard flytrap that has flat, thin lobes, these look inflated or swollen.

Coloration: It is a "red-blush" cultivar. While it starts out green, it develops a deep, vivid red coloration on the trap lobes during the summer months. When you combine this bright red color with the rounded, protruding shape of the mutant traps, the reason for the name becomes very clear.

Non-Functional Traps: Like most extreme mutants (including 'MD Buttcheeks'), the traps on 'Monkey Ass' are generally non-functional. They lack the mechanical ability to snap shut, so they won't be catching any flies on their own.

Growth Habit: It produces long petioles that can reach up to 6 inches, holding the mutated traps upright. It is a stable mutation, meaning the plant consistently produces these "cheeky" traps rather than reverting to normal ones.

Interesting Fact

In some older European circles, there was occasionally confusion between this plant and a clone called 'Tellereisen', but Christian Klein clarified in the hobby forums that 'Monkey Ass' was specifically his "Clone 8" and remains a distinct entity in the mutant flytrap world.

Care Requirements

Light — 6+ hours of direct sun daily. A south-facing window or outdoor placement in full sun is ideal.

Water — Pure water only, under 50ppm dissolved solids. Use distilled, reverse osmosis, or collected rainwater. Most tap water will not work. Keep roots sitting in a shallow tray of water.

Soil — Pure peat moss or long-fiber sphagnum, with optional perlite or sand added for drainage. Garden soil will not work.

Dormancy — Required. Allow 3 to 4 months of cold dormancy each winter for long-term health.

Hardiness — Zones 7–10 outdoors, or overwinter indoors in a cool location.

Shipping & What to Expect

Our bare root Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytraps) are shipped according to their natural growing cycle. During the active growing season (spring through early fall), you'll receive a plant with live traps, often in vibrant color. In the winter months, Venus flytraps naturally enter dormancy and will be shipped without leaves or with small winter rosettes — this is completely normal and essential for the plant's long-term health.

Please note that the plant and photo shown are representative of the variety but not the exact plant you will receive. Each plant is unique, and we guarantee a healthy, established rhizome ready to grow.
