Drosera regia, the legendary King Sundew, is an extraordinarily rare and endangered species endemic to the Bainskloof Range near Cape Town, South Africa, where it clings to existence in remote high-altitude valleys at 500–900 meters. This aristocrat of sundews produces massive, deep red tentacles and striking scarlet flowers, commanding a position as perhaps the most coveted of all carnivorous plants for serious collectors worldwide.
Care Requirements
Light — Full sun, 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily. A south-facing window, outdoor placement, or grow lights work well.
Water — Pure water only, under 50ppm dissolved solids. Use distilled, reverse osmosis, or collected rainwater. Most tap water will not work. Use the tray method — keep roots sitting in a shallow tray of water.
Soil — Pure peat moss or long-fiber sphagnum, with optional perlite or sand added for drainage. Garden soil will not work.
Dormancy — Varies by species. Temperate Drosera require 3–4 months of cool winter dormancy. Tropical and subtropical species grow year-round and do not require dormancy.
Humidity — Moderate to high humidity preferred. Most sundews adapt well to open-air growing once established.
Shipping & What to Expect
Our bare root Drosera (sundews) are shipped according to their natural growing cycle. During the active growing season you will receive a plant with live leaves and dew-covered tentacles. Temperate species shipped in winter dormancy will arrive without active leaves — this is completely normal and essential for long-term health.
Please note that the plant and photo shown are representative of the variety but not the exact plant you will receive. Each plant is unique, and we guarantee a healthy, established root system ready to grow.
