Heliamphora purpurascens from Ptari Tepui's misty summit brings an architectural elegance to the collector's greenhouse—rigid, woody pitchers reaching 25 cm topped with exceptionally large, darkly pigmented nectar spoons that curve sharply forward. This 2011 Wistuba discovery, endemic to Venezuela's high-altitude cloud forest at 2,400–2,500 m, produces tight rosettes with distinctive red-veined pitchers and a waist-level drainage mechanism, making it a prized addition for serious Heliamphora enthusiasts.
Care Requirements
Light — Bright indirect light or moderate direct sun. Avoid intense midday sun — Heliamphora prefer cooler, highland conditions.
Water — Pure water only, under 50ppm dissolved solids. Use distilled, reverse osmosis, or collected rainwater. Most tap water will not work. Keep the pitchers partially filled with water and the soil consistently moist.
Temperature — Cool to intermediate. Day temps of 65–80°F (18–27°C) with cooler nights of 45–60°F (7–16°C). Many species require cool nights year-round.
Soil — Pure long-fiber sphagnum moss or a mix of peat and perlite. Garden soil will not work.
Humidity — High humidity preferred, 60–90%. A terrarium or greenhouse setup is ideal for most species.
