Sarracenia ‘Sword Swallower’ is a primary hybrid of S. leucophylla x S. flava, making it a Sarracenia x moorei of exceptional pedigree. The cross was made by Phil Faulisi of Santa Clara County, California in the spring of 2002, with the specific clone selected in 2008.
The cultivar name was coined by Trey Hale of Tallahassee, Florida, and formally submitted for registration by Faulisi in June 2016. Prior to naming, it circulated among collectors under the trial designation S. moorei “Phil” clone 3.
The plant is defined by its extreme verticality. Pitchers grow tall and narrow with a sword-like silhouette that sets it apart from broader moorei selections, including its sibling cultivars ‘Saurus’ and ‘Hot Lips’. The rubricorpora parentage introduces deep red infusions into the throat and neck, playing against the bright white fenestrations inherited from the leucophylla side. The result is a plant that combines elegance with drama in equal measure.
‘Sword Swallower’ is widely regarded as one of the more refined Faulisi hybrids, valued for its slender form where ‘Saurus’ is celebrated for sheer mass. For collectors who appreciate documented lineage, named breeders, and a plant with genuine show history behind it, this is a standout acquisition.
Our bare root Sarracenia (North American pitcher plants) are shipped according to their natural growing cycle. During the active growing season (spring through early fall), you'll receive a plant with live foliage, often including vibrant pitchers. In the winter months, Sarracenia naturally enter dormancy, and will be shipped without leaves or with brown, dying pitchers—this is completely normal and essential for the plant's long-term health. Please note that the plant and photo shown are representative of the variety but not the exact plant you will receive. Each plant is unique, and we guarantee a healthy, established rhizome ready to grow.
