Utricularia sandersonii Blue Form is one of the easiest bladderworts you can grow, and one of the best starting points if you have never kept a Utricularia before. Native to South Africa, this species grows terrestrially on wet rock and soil rather than up in moss like the tepui and cloud forest species. This blue form produces a steady flush of tiny flowers that really do look like little rabbit faces, which is exactly why growers love it.
Unlike the epiphytic Utricularia in my collection, sandersonii does not want pure sphagnum moss. It traps prey underground with tiny bladder traps hidden in the soil around its roots, catching microscopic soil life rather than insects on leaves, same mechanism as the rest of the genus, just a different home.
Quick Care Guide: Terrestrial Utricularia
Media: a fine, moist peat-perlite mix works well here. Skip the pure sphagnum moss the epiphytic species need.
Moisture: keep the soil evenly moist. Bottom watering in a shallow tray works great.
Light: bright light, more sun tolerant than most other Utricularia. A sunny windowsill can work.
Growth habit: spreads quickly and fills in a pot fast, making it a great candidate for hanging baskets and shallow dishes.
Water: distilled or rainwater only, same as every other carnivorous plant in the collection.
