Pinguicula primuliflora Rose

primuliflora is not a Mexican butterwort, it is a native of the southeastern United States, found in wet peat and sphagnum along streams and pond edges from the Florida panhandle into Mississippi. The Rose form gets its name from the pinkish violet flowers with a white center and a yellow throat, closer to a wild primrose than the showier blooms you see on the Mexican species, which is actually where the species name comes from.

What makes primuliflora fun to grow is how it propagates. Little plantlets form right at the tips of the older leaves, and once the parent leaf breaks down the plantlet already has roots and is ready to grow on its own. It is one of the easiest carnivorous plants to multiply without doing anything yourself.

Unlike the Mexican Pinguicula I sell, this species does not want to dry out. It comes from boggy ground and is happiest sitting in a tray of water full time, more like a Sarracenia or a sundew than a typical butterwort.

## Care at a Glance

**Light** — Bright but filtered light. Full, hot afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.

**Water** — Distilled water, rainwater, or reverse osmosis only. Keep the tray full at all times, this species does not want to dry out.

**Soil** — A peat and perlite mix, similar to what you would use for Sarracenia or Drosera, wetter and richer in organic matter than a typical Mexican Pinguicula mix.

**Temperature** — Tolerates a wider range than the Mexican species. Protect from hard frost.

**Dormancy** — No succulent dormancy. The rosette stays in leaf year round, though growth slows in winter.

**Humidity** — Adaptable given consistently wet soil. No terrarium required.

## Shipping

Your plant ships bare root, packed carefully for transit. Pot it up on arrival in a peat and perlite mix and set it in a full water tray right away, this species should never be allowed to dry out, even during transit recovery.
