‘Weser’ is one of the great classics of the butterwort world. This hybrid has been around since the 1980s, named after a German river near where the hybridizer Harald Weiner lived, and it has earned its reputation every year since. Registered as a cultivar in 1998, it remains one of the most recommended Mexican butterworts in cultivation — and for good reason.

The flowers are a vibrant pink with darker purple coloration where the petals meet and a stark, solitary white streak at the throat. Few butterworts stop people in their tracks the way a blooming ‘Weser’ does. Its broad, thin leaves are sticky to the touch and covered in tiny hairs, forming a flat rosette that shifts from soft green under lower light to an intense pink under bright conditions.

Every leaf surface is armed with glands that glisten and trap fungus gnats, fruit flies, and other small insects without any help from you. This is a plant that earns its place on the windowsill.

‘Weser’ is a very forgiving, easy growing butterwort that handles the imperfections of home growing better than most carnivores. It does not demand a terrarium, high humidity, or obsessive watering routines. Bright light, pure water, and a lean soil mix are all it asks for.
