Pinguicula agnata {Zimapan, Hidalgo, México}
*Mexican Butterwort — True Type Location*
-----
This is not just any *agnata*. The Zimapan form is the holotype — the original, the specimen from which the species was formally described. It was collected from the lower portion of a nearly sheer calcareous north-facing cliff on the dry rocky slopes of Barranca de Toliman, in the district of Zimapan, Hidalgo, at an altitude of 1,524 meters. That detail matters. Location data on a butterwort listing is not decoration — it is provenance.
The flowers are blue-violet, and the sticky leaves are lined with stiff bristles that capture prey on contact. Large white to purple blooms appear in late spring, and the succulent leaves retain moisture through the dry season. The Zimapan form is notably broader and more robust than many clones in circulation, with a generous rosette that commands attention under good light.
*P. agnata* holds a distinction in the genus: it was the first Mexican Pinguicula known to have glands on both the top and bottom of the leaves — a trait that makes it a more efficient insect trapper than most of its relatives and a point of genuine fascination for serious growers.
As a species, *P. agnata* is among the easiest carnivorous plants to grow and makes an excellent houseplant. It tolerates a range of conditions that would stress lesser carnivores, adapts readily to windowsill or LED growing, and rewards consistent care with vigorous, year-round growth.
If you want a true species with documented wild origin and real horticultural history, this is one of the best starting points in the entire genus.

## Care at a Glance
**Light** — Bright indirect to direct; will take more sun than most butterworts
**Water** — Distilled, rainwater, or RO only; tray method during active growth; reduce watering significantly in winter
**Soil** — Well-draining, low-nutrient mix; perlite-heavy or purpose-made Pinguicula blend; prefers slightly alkaline conditions reflecting its limestone cliff habitat
**Temperature** — 60 to 85°F; no frost tolerance
**Dormancy** — Shifts to tight succulent rosette in winter; keep on the dry side during this period
**Humidity** — Adaptable; no terrarium required

## Shipping
Your plant arrives bare root, carefully packed for safe transit. Pot it up upon arrival in a well-draining, low-nutrient mix. A perlite-heavy or purpose-made Pinguicula blend works perfectly.
If your order arrives in winter, the plant may be in its succulent dormancy phase with smaller, tighter leaves. This is normal. Do not overwater during this period.
